M 81 Galaxy (NGC 3031)

This galaxy is also known as Bode's Nebula, it was only back in the 1950's that we did not really know what galaxies were and they were referred to as nebulas. M 81 is located in Ursa Major (The Great Bear). This spiral galaxy is magnitude 7.92 and is 26.7' x 14.2' in size. This shows up well in medium sized scopes at a dark sky site. It is 12 million light years away from Earth.
